You didn’t think we were going to let Vancouver’s first fibre festival begin without a party, did you? Let’s kick the weekend off in style!

Join us on Friday October 12, 2012 for the Knit City Kick Off Party! Mingle and knit, crochet, or spin alongside the Knit City vendors, instuctors and volunteers, and enjoy amazing lectures by two exceptional women.

At 7:30 pm, Kim Werker will be presenting “Crochet! (Even for knitters.)”

Crochet has gone in and out of fashion over the last 150 years in North America, and it’s very much in fashion now. Kim Werker, local author of six crochet books and former editor of Interweave Crochet magazine, will speak about how the current crochet revival differs from previous fads, and why even knitters should be enthusiastic about it. She’ll explore how the internet affects our experience of making stuff with yarn, and about why trying new things is good, even if it’s scary. Come with questions!

At 8:30 pm, Sylvia Olsen will be presenting “The women whose knitting made and saved their lives: a Coast Salish legacy and the Cowichan Sweater”

Sylvia’s presentation is a wonderful story of Coast Salish knitters, who, almost one hundred years ago, created their own knitting style, a world famous sweater and an industry that made and saved their lives. The history of the Cowichan sweater and the women who made them is a tale of innovation, hard work, hard times, ingenuity, beauty and love. Sylvia’s story is enhanced by stunning historical images and accompanied by a unique display of antique Cowichan sweaters. Sylvia lived most of her life in a Coast Salish community immersed in the knitting industry and brings a rare perspective to the story.

The Kick Off Party will be held at the Croatian Cultural Centre, from 7pm-11pm, on Friday October 12. There will be a cash bar available.

Vendors, Instructors and Volunteers attend free of charge. Public tickets are $25 + HST, and include a weekend pass to the Knit City marketplace.

Bring your knitting, crocheting or spinning, and help us kick off Knit City!
