I can’t believe it has taken me so long to make a granny square, but I am now a true believer.
These things are amazing. They eat up stash yarn in a most satisfying way, they look cute even when they are ugly, and making them is totally addictive even if you don’t really like to crochet. The granny square is iconic, people. They are awesome. And so cheerful!
I made this last night! It took no time.
The best thing about granny squares is that they are so versatile. You can put them anywhere! On a lampshade! On a cushion! Teapots! Tote bags! On toast! Well, maybe not. But you can make afghans, granny square bunting, potholders…..you name it, you can put a granny square on it.
I recently bought Granny Square Love by Sarah London and I am now totally inspired to decorate my entire house with granny squares. I’ll keep you posted on my progress – I think my first project will be to cover an old Ikea lamp in my bedroom.
After that, anything is fair game.
* If you watch Portlandia, you’ve likely seen the Put A Bird On It! sketch . If you haven’t, watch it – it’s hilarious.
