C’mon, Get Hap(py)! A Knitting Retreat with Gudrun Johnston
We are so pleased to announce our Spring 2017 retreat on Galiano Island. C’mon, Get Hap(py) with us and special guest instructor Gudrun Johnston!
The retreat will take place Friday May 5th to Sunday May 7th, 2017 at the beautiful Bodega Ridge Resort on BC’s idyllic Galiano Island. The resort is home to seven modern, self-contained log cabins and a great lodge on 22 beautiful acres of rural countryside at the island’s peaceful north end. Located at the base of Bodega Ridge, the property offers magnificent views of Trincomali channel, the surrounding Gulf Islands and the Vancouver Island Mountains.
Joining us as resident instructor for the weekend is knitwear designer and Shetland Hap knitting expert Gudrun Johnston. Gudrun was born in Shetland in the 70’s when her mother was running the successful knitwear design company, The Shetland Trader. She spent her early years in Shetland and the rest of her childhood on mainland Scotland in various locations. Some 30 years later she has followed in her mother’s footsteps by reviving the Shetland Trader name, and has made a niche for herself in the knitwear design industry. Gudrun often includes aspects of her heritage in her work and has self published two collections of Shetland inspired designs under the Shetland Trader name.
Our weekend Hap retreat will be spent getting in-depth instruction from Gudrun on the history and construction of the Hap shawl. The casual setting and small class size makes for a unique and wonderful knitting class experience. Gudrun will also be entertaining us with a presentation and slideshow to introduce you to the Shetland landscape and it’s textile history.
Our 9 hours of class time total will cover all aspects of the Hap shawl construction working both outwards and inwards from the borders, as well as explore the complex lace patterns also found in Shetland shawls.
