Sea to Sky Knitter’s Retreat

November 17, 2017 4:00 pm - November 19, 2017 1:00 pm Brew Creek Centre, 1 Brew Creek Rd, Whistler, BC V0N 1B0

Traveling along the Sea to Sky highway is a breathtaking experience. No matter how many times you drive it, the towering, snow peaked mountains and the ocean view are always impressive and awe-inspiring. We are so thrilled to invite you to a very special weekend amongst this incredible scenery, at The Brew Creek Centre in beautiful Whistler, BC with three world class instructors: Felicia Lo, Clara Parkes and Stephanie Pearl-McPhee.

From Friday November 17th until Sunday November 19th, we will call The Brew Creek Centre our home. It is an amazing place to spend a weekend, complete with luxurious accommodations, meditative walking paths, modern, light-filled workshop spaces and locally sourced cuisine. The 12 acre property is secluded and full of quiet beauty. Inspiration is all around.

Joining us for the weekend are three equally inspiring instructors:

Felicia Lo is a designer and entrepreneur, born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. Her lifelong passion for knitting, colour, and design led her to starting a blog in 2004. A year later, SweetGeorgia was founded at her dining room table with nothing more than three skeins of sock yarn for sale on Etsy. Since then, SweetGeorgia has become a way of life where work and play are inseparable. When she’s not playing with yarn, she’s chasing her two littles around with her Oranje-loving husband.

Clara Parkes abandoned San Francisco’s high-tech hubbub nearly two decades ago to build a quieter creative life on the coast of Maine. In 2000, she turned passion to profession when she launched Knitter’s Review, the first comprehensive online knitting magazine and community.

Since then, through her writings, workshops, bestselling books, television and radio appearances, and small-batch artisan yarns, Parkes has carried knitters into the 21st century. She is a passionate proponent of breed awareness, slow knitting, slow stashing, and knitting locally.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is a writer, mother, blogger, knitting humorist, philosopher and the author of seven funny books about knitting (and other stuff) two of which spent glorious weeks at the very bottom of the New York Times bestseller’s list. Stephanie lives in Toronto, Canada, where she writes, knits, weaves, spins and rides her bike very long distances. She keeps the award winning blog in her inestimable spare time.

You will have the opportunity to take one in-depth, 3 hour workshop with each instructor during the weekend:

Yarn 101 with Clara Parkes

Join us on a journey deep into our stashes as we seek answers to the eternal questions, “What should I make with this yarn?” and “What yarn should I use for this project?” We’ll look at some of the most common fibers that go into yarn, examine the different ways those fibers can be prepared and blended together, and play with samples of the most common twists and plies on the market — all while keeping in mind our ultimate goal, the ability to make confident pairings of yarn and project every single time. Even experienced knitters come away with an expanded understanding of how they can better match yarn and project.

All About Mawata with Stephanie Pearl McPhee

This workshop explores the pleasures of knitting with pure silk (silk hankies). We’ll talk about the silk cycle, we’ll experiment with making them from cocoons, and work with them as a pure silk source. Even if you’ve no interest in hankies, this is an interesting workshop for all textile artists.

Skill level: All – although beginners should have a good grip on the basics. Cast on and off, knit, purl, increase and decrease.

  • 3mm needles, it’s best to avoid circulars, it can be hard to get the unspun silk over the join. The stitches will fit on a DPN, if you don’t have straights.

Colour Play – a colour theory primer & yarn tasting party with Felicia Lo

SweetGeorgia is all about passionate, relentless, and unapologetic colour. Over the years we’ve found that people really want to enjoy colour but are hesitant to experiment because they worry about making the wrong colour choices. Knitting takes a big investment of time, money, and energy, so there is added pressure to choose the “right” colours.

This workshop will walk you through the basics of working with color and help you feel more confident about creating your own palettes and color combinations for your projects. We will play and combine different colours based on a variety of inspirations and then find different ways to knit them together to produce completely unique results.

  • Bring your own knitting needles to knit a range of gauges, an interchangeable set would be a good idea (need needle sizes between about 3.5 mm to 8 mm, depending on how many strands of Tough Love are held together)
  • Notebook and pen to create palettes and make notes about observations
